An Abe Lincoln quote I picked out of Adam Goodheart’s book, 1861: “I consider the central idea pervading this struggle is the necessity that is upon us, of proving that popular government is not an absurdity. We must settle this question now, whether in a free government the minority have the right to break up the government whenever they choose. If we fail it will go far to prove the incapability of the people to govern themselves.”
We find ourselves constantly aware of divisions nationally and worldwide that indicate an apparent inability for humanity to focus on common goals and the ability to work toward coexistence. Can we as individuals do this effectively. How are our relationships with our neighbors, our friends, our family members? Do they reflect a balance in our ability to express our needs and listen to those of others?
Perhaps through the creation of a peaceful personal life, we can generate the capacity for contributing to our social responsibilities. The level of which, need not be greater than our capacity to do so, but in recognition of how we make a difference in the functioning of the systems that produce healthy communities. Living in a healthy community supports the health of each and every member. As we pay attention to the signs of our own personal health and take appropriate steps to maintain it, so too we can observe the signs of our communities’ health and address them as well.
We live in a truly complex society. We live locally, nationally and globally concurrently. We have municipal, county, state and national governing bodies that influence our choices and maintain our security. We have an input in each one of these. By exercising our right to challenge and shape our leadership, we can each directly influence how these bodies function. It is exactly like the homeostasis of our physiology, there is flow going in both directions. What you put in, influences what you get out. Let us build together healthy communities. Let us work together to make this nation, “One Nation…” Keep the Faith. Spread the Love. Be in Peace.
